Trained by North Carolina State University faculty and staff, Extension Master GardenerSM Volunteers (EMGVs) provide researched-based information and education about gardening and environmental stewardship to individuals and communities across the State.
Since the inception of the East Lincoln Community Garden (ELCG) at Sally’s YMCA, Lincoln County Extension Master Gardener volunteers have been an integral part of creating and improving the garden infrastructure and serving the needs of its gardeners as educators. Community Gardeners of all skill levels can benefit from working collaboratively with EMGVs to get the most from their efforts to grow healthy plants, maximize produce yield, and add to their own gardening expertise.
As trained and experienced gardeners, EMGVs may serve as consultants for troubleshooting issues during the growing season. Examples include pest and disease identification, mitigations, proper garden hygiene practices, soil health maintenance, and irrigation best practices. They can serve as mentors and the “go-to person” for hands-on demonstrations of gardening best practices. They can also be effective educators for one-on-one and small group instruction.
Need help? Contact the Garden Manager to set up a meeting with an Extension Master Gardener!
Please note, EMGVs will work alongside gardeners but are not the labor force for maintaining the garden. Every Community Gardener is required to participate in monthly workdays.
