SUMMARY:Plan for the Week | 21 - 27 JUNE
DESCRIPTION:Now that Summer is officially here\, work hours in the garden will be scheduled earlier in the day to avoid the heat and any afternoon thunderstorms that usually pop up this time of year. \nPlant progress \nAll onions were harvested and are curing off-site before being donated to the Lake Norman Food Mission.  Tomatoes are running behind schedule due to late planting/cool nights in May but are showing signs the first group will be ready to pick later this week or next week.  All varieties of peppers are growing prolifically and harvested weekly. Cucumbers and pole beans are growing over their supports and should start producing soon.  Sweet potato slips are also getting ‘leggy’ and will be trained to the west fence as they continue to grow.  Eggplant is producing well and harvested weekly. Four beds were were replanted with Caribou Russet potatoes last week and should show signs of plant growth this week. \nPests & Plant Disease \nNuisance pests are becoming more prevalent so insecticidal soap is available to treat plants as needed.  BOLO for tomato hornworms\, cucumber beetles\, leaf-footed bugs\, and aphids. Japanese Beetles are also a problem\, especially on basil plants.  However\, they are typically gone by mid-July.  Plant diseases are also making more of an appearance.  Copper fungicide is being applied to tomato plants\, also as needed.  Any infected leaves/stems are being removed and disposed of. All spraying must be completed in the morning before temperatures get above 80 degrees. \nHose Use \nPlease be aware static water in hoses is very hot from sun exposure and can scald you and kill plants! If you are using the hose to water plants or clean your hands\, please let the water run first until it is cool.  Never spray plants or run water on your skin until the water cools off! \nThe Garden Manager or Master Gardeners will be on site when the garden is open.  Please check in when you arrive to see how you can add your expertise!

SUMMARY:Plan for the Week | 5- 11 JULY
DESCRIPTION:Community Garden plants are growing well despite the heat and lack of rain. Irrigation was increased to run three times during the day to keep plants adequately watered and will be closely monitored each day. Tomato and pepper plants are stressed during the high heat afternoons. \nGarden activities for volunteers will be in the morning only.  Once temperatures exceed 90 degrees\, the garden will be closed to avoid heat-related problems.  Volunteers must bring water or other drinks to stay hydrated.

SUMMARY:Plan for the Week | 12 - 18 JULY
DESCRIPTION:Last week\, the Community Garden experienced storm damage from two T-Storm events to include high winds.  Several tomato-laden plants were blown over.  This week\, we’ll try to recover as many tomatoes off of the plants as possible and let them ripen indoors before donation.  If the plants are recoverable\, we’ll attempt to restake them so they can continue to produce.  If not recoverable\, they’ ll be removed from the garden.  High heat and insects (primarily stink bugs) are also adversely affecting the plants and harvests.  I’ll be aggressively spraying this week to control them. Regardless of the challenges\, over 300 pounds of produce were harvested last week.   \nGarden activities for volunteers will be in the morning only.  Once temperatures exceed 90 degrees\, the garden will be closed to avoid heat-related problems.  Volunteers must bring water or other drinks to stay hydrated.

SUMMARY:Plan for the Week | 19 - 25 JULY
DESCRIPTION:The weather forecast shows another week of high heat and periods of T-storms. Efforts this week will focus on plant care\, mitigating harmful insects\, and harvesting produce that’s ready to be picked.  Despite the challenging weather\, the garden yielded over 250 pounds of produce over the past two weeks that was donated to the Lake Norman Food Mission! \nGarden activities for volunteers will be in the morning only.  Once temperatures exceed 90 degrees\, the garden will be closed to avoid heat-related problems.  Volunteers must bring water or other drinks to stay hydrated.  Thank you for your support!
