SUMMARY:Plan for the Week | 24 - 30 May
DESCRIPTION:Finally\, some much needed rain! Plants are doing well\, growing\, and starting to produce.  Last week saw a harvest of 90 pounds of Yukon Gold potatoes along with Hungarian Banana Peppers and a spicy Big Jake pepper variety.  Bell peppers will be ready to harvest this week along with more soft neck garlic.  Eggplant is also coming along.  Pole beans were planted along with four varieties of cucumbers—two beds each for the beans and cucumbers.  Carrots will be planted later in the week as soil temperatures are now consistently above 65 degrees. \nDue to having more rain in the forecast\, the garden will only be open to the public on a limited basis.  Please check the Event Calendar if you are interested in volunteering.  Your support is greatly appreciated! \nThe Garden Manager or Master Gardeners will be on site when the garden is open.  Please check in when you arrive to see how you can add your expertise.

SUMMARY:Plan for the Week | 17- 23 May
DESCRIPTION:The weather forecast looks like temperatures will remain above 50 degrees at night for the week with above-normal daily high temperatures in the 90s during the day. We can finally direct sow carrots\, pole beans\, and cucumbers as soil temperatures are remaining above 60 degrees.  Plant supports are in place and soaker hoses will be installed in all beds being planted. \nI expect to receive sweet potato slips by the end of the month which will be planted in the side beds running along the west fence. Other tasks will focus on observing plant growth\, watching for insect and disease issues\, and taking the appropriate steps to mitigate any observed problems.  There are several beds that still require hand watering (onions\, potatoes\, and beds along the west fence).  One bed of garlic was harvested last week.  More garlic will be checked and most likely harvested this week. \nThe Garden Manager or Master Gardeners will be on site when the garden is open.  Please check in when you arrive to see how you can add your expertise.

SUMMARY:GARDEN MAINTENANCE | Workday
DESCRIPTION:Open to all volunteers and Extension Master Gardeners. Our goal is to continue mitigating pop-up weeds in garden common space areas\, ensure garden beds are weed-free\, trim and mulch perennial plants outside of the fence\, and remove refuse from the tool shed area.  New gardeners will be shown how to manage plants actively growing (garlic\, potatoes\, peppers\, onions\, tomatoes). \nPlease dress accordingly for the weather.  Tasks will involve kneeling\, bending\, stretching\, and light lifting.  Bring along a kneeling pad or bench/kneeler as needed along with gloves and any personal tools you prefer.  Just to note\, the tool shed has common garden tools that volunteers are welcome to use.  Please also remember to bring drinks to stay hydrated. \nIf rain is forecast\, the workday will be canceled the evening before and the calendar will be updated to show the cancelation.

SUMMARY:Plan for the Week | 10-16 May
DESCRIPTION:Good progress was made last week topping off garden beds with humus\, getting transplants started\, mulching around plants\, and installing drip irrigation lines. The rain was a welcome event and plants are responding to the warmer weather.  Pepper plants are producing and our first harvest will be coming up soon! \nThis week will be a continuation of filling up beds with direct sow seeds and transplants\, and monitoring existing plants for signs of insect damage and and any onset of disease. \nThe Garden Manager or Master Gardeners will be on site when the garden is open.  Please check in when you arrive to see how you can add your expertise.

SUMMARY:SPECIAL EVENT | Garden Project Day
DESCRIPTION:Project Day at the Community Garden \nThe event is open to all volunteers.  United Way is providing labor assistance to help us get a few sprucing-up projects completed.  We have several wrought iron benches\, a table\, and six chairs to rejuvenate after being out in the weather for several seasons.  Tasks will involve light sanding and spray painting (black\, yellow and green) our garden furniture to make things more visually inviting.  Sally’s YMCA is providing the materials for us.  We’ll also put together and place a colorful wind-catcher. \nThis is a break from typical gardening tasks that can be completed in the time we’re there. It’s also the starting point for adding more visual appeal to the garden environment through the year. \nCome out in comfortable work clothes that you don’t mind getting a little sanding dust on and maybe a few paint spots too—depending on your spray-painting talents.  We’ll have nitrile gloves for everyone\, so your hands stay paint-free. \nFor Extension Master Gardener volunteers\, your volunteer time may be recorded for supporting these community garden project tasks that were approved by Extension. \nThank you for your support!

SUMMARY:GARDEN MAINTENANCE & PLANTING
DESCRIPTION:Now that nighttime temperatures are forecast to be favorable for getting plants in the ground without fear of frost\, today’s activities will include watering beds with existing plants\, and getting a few new beds planted with eggplant and peppers.  The garden irrigation system is active so as plants go into beds\, irrigation lines will be run as well.

New gardeners will be shown how to manage plants actively growing (garlic\, potatoes).
